7 Steps For A Healthy Smile

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” The famous saying was coined in regards to fire safety. But like all timeless quotes, it applies to many more aspects of modern life. At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall TX , we apply it to dental health.

Keeping your smile beautiful and healthy is done most effectively with preventative measures. Some essential guidelines are highlighted here.

  • Don’t forget the floss. Flossing between your teeth daily will do wonders for your teeth and keep your gums healthy too.
  • Wear a protective mouthguard when joining in an activity where your mouth could possibly be damaged.
  • Avoid smoking and sugary foods.
  • Piercings put you at greater risk for chipped teeth, infection, and nerve damage, so if you have them, make sure to keep your mouth extra clean!
  • Schedule regular dental visits.

How Often Should I Replace My Toothbrush?

How Often Should I Replace My Toothbrush?

Have you replaced your toothbrush lately? You don’t have to answer that. At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall, we recommend replacing your toothbrush every three months.

Too many people wait too long to get a new toothbrush, which can be bad for their dental health. It’s one of the reasons why most dentists hand out free ones at every checkup.

Of course, you don’t need to mark your calendar or set up an alert on your smartphone. How often you replace your toothbrush depends on how often you use it. We recommend, strongly, that you brush at least twice a day. If you’re brushing twice a day, picking up a new toothbrush at the store every three months is recommended.

Why So Often?

A toothbrush can become familiar, like a comfy pair of shoes. Sometimes the idea of tossing out the old one and replacing it isn’t very appealing. But after three months, the bristles are getting bent and frayed. There may be some gunk – dried toothpaste foam – starting to build up, too. Yuk. So toss that old brush, and get a fresh one!

What kind of brush should you be using? There are so many choices. The most important thing is to choose a brush with soft bristles. They are gentle on the gums, but still effective in brushing away plaque.

To recap: for good dental health, replace your toothbrush every three months. Patients from Rockwall, Royse City, Backland, Heath, and Fate come to At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall for family dentistry and dental implants, and much more. Schedule your next checkup with us today!

Soft, Medium, Or Buzz Lightyear?

Affordable Dentistry in Rockwall

At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall, patients sometimes ask us how they should go about choosing a toothbrush. Picking this most basic dental health tool can be as hard as choosing a paint color, and there seem to be just as many choices.

The most important consideration for a toothbrush is soft bristles. We recommend them for everyone: from our youngest patients to the oldest. Soft bristles are gentle on your gums, but are still rigid enough to brush away plaque and food debris from teeth. Remember to use a light touch as you brush, so that the bristles don’t bend.

Tooth enamel is extremely sensitive, and it can wear down over time. Using a hard bristled brush can scratch it. That’s also why you should use a light touch as you brush.

If your child shows any resistance to brushing, get them involved by letting them choose their own brush. There are lots to choose from at the store, including brushes with just about any cartoon character you can think of. The important thing is to settle on one with the ADA seal of approval.

Brushing your teeth twice a day is essential to maintaining healthy teeth and gums. (So is flossing, but we’ll save that topic for another blog post.)

At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall we offer complete family dentistry services. People from Rockwall, Royse City, Backland, Heath, and Fate also come to us for restorative dentistry, and much more. Call for an appointment today!

Focusing On The Top 3 At Karen E Williamson D.D.S., P.A

porcelain veneers price Rockwall

There are three dental health issues that affect as many as a third of all Americans. At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall we want all of our patients to have healthy teeth and gums. If any of these common issues affect you, tell us. We can do something about it.

The problems were identified by the Health Policy Institute, which is part of the American Dental Association. In a survey of fifteen thousand people from all walks of life, they asked about problems with teeth and gums.

The top three answers were:

  • Tooth pain
  • Difficulty with chewing
  • Dry mouth

Tooth Pain. When a tooth hurts, it’s a clear sign that something is wrong. The most likely cause of tooth pain is a cavity, but it’s not the only one. It could also be a sign of gum disease, which is one of the leading causes of tooth loss.

Difficulty With Chewing. This too may indicate a cavity, but again, there could be other problems. There may be enamel erosion, a cracked tooth, or recessed gums. It can be serious, because certain foods may be difficult. If you avoid them you could be missing out on important nutrients that your body needs.

Dry Mouth. This, in fact, was the most common issue cited in the survey. It isn’t just a matter of being thirsty all the time. Chronic dry mouth can indicate poor saliva flow. This, in turn, can indicate a systemic condition. Dry mouth is a common side effect from some prescription medications. Poor saliva flow makes you more vulnerable to tooth decay and gum disease.

If you’re experiencing any of these issues, call us at Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall right away to schedule an appointment. Patients from Rockwall, Royse City, Backland, Heath, and Fate know they can trust our family and restorative dentistry. Schedule a cleaning and checkup with us today!

How Long Should You Brush?

Backland Cosmetic Dentistry

At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall TX we recommend brushing your teeth for at least two minutes, every time you brush. Most people think they brush that long but would be surprised if they actually set a timer. Many of us only brush for about a minute, if that.

Essential Dental Health
Brushing your teeth is an important part of any dental health routine. We recommend brushing your teeth twice a day, and with a soft-bristled toothbrush. We strongly recommend flossing, too. Before or after you brush? The jury remains out on that one. We think before is better, but the most important thing is that you do it.

Be sure to get all over your teeth: the front and the sides, inside and out, and the tops. When you do the sides, be sure you brush along the gumline. Use a gentle touch, and hold the brush at a 45-degree angle.

As you do the front and side surfaces, move the brush in gentle, circular strokes.

Toothpaste
Use a pea-sized blob of fluoridated toothpaste – or more than pea-sized, if you’re so inclined. Too much toothpaste is no big deal, but be sure to use enough.

Be sure the head of the toothbrush isn’t too big, especially if you have a smaller mouth. It needs to fit easily between your cheeks and gums. The handle is less important. Make sure it feels comfortable in your hand. Replace your toothbrush every three months, if not more often.

Tooth Massage
Plaque is soft and loose, so you don’t have to brush very hard to remove it. Think of it not so much as brushing, but massaging your teeth.

And remember, brush for at least two minutes! If you’re running late, and are tempted to cut it short, resist. If it helps, use a stopwatch.

At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall TX we want the best possible dental health for all of our patients. People from Rockwall, Royse City, Backland, Heath, and Fate come to our practice for general and restorative dentistry. Schedule your next checkup with us today!

Let’s Work Together To Keep Your Smile Healthy And Beautiful

low cost tooth bleaching Rockwall

At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall, we remind our patients that good dental health is the result of two main components: what we can do in our office and what you can do at home.

We recommend regular cleanings and checkups here at the office: on average, every six months. Your teeth get a thorough cleaning, and we examine you for any signs of gum disease. Every checkup includes a screening for oral cancer. The American Cancer Society projects that about 53,000 people will get a form of oral cancer this year. Of those, nearly eleven thousand cases will be terminal.

At home, it’s essential that you brush your teeth every day; twice a day is better. That regimen should include flossing, too. We recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Should you floss before or after you brush? The jury is out on that one. The most important thing is that you do it.

Use a pea-sized blob of fluoridated toothpaste. There are lots of different types of toothpastes out there, and the brand you choose doesn’t matter all that much. Just be sure it contains fluoride, and that the box carries the American Dental Association sea.

And that is what good dental health boils down to: brushing and flossing every day, and regular checkups here at Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall. Our patients come to our office from Royse City, Backland, Heath, and Fate for family and restorative dentistry, and many other services. Call for an appointment today!

5 Reasons To Schedule A Dental Cleaning Today

professional dental cleaning Rockwall

Are you one of those people who dread having your teeth cleaned? At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall, we get it: no one really likes having their teeth and gums poked, prodded, and scraped. But for most people it’s simple and painless, and in the long run it is well worth it!

Here are five really good reasons to schedule your next cleaning:

1. Protect Your Gums

It’s not only cavities that can damage a tooth until it is beyond saving. Gum disease that leads to bone loss is just as bad. Gum disease is caused by a buildup of plaque that creates pockets of infection between the gums and tooth roots. In serious cases it can lead to tooth loss.

2. Prevent Cavities

Even if you brush and floss morning and night, plaque can collect in those hard-to-reach places. Only a professional cleaning can get it all.

3. Check for Oral Cancer

The Oral Cancer Foundation relates this sobering news: oral cancer claims one life approximately every hour—that’s 48,250 deaths a year.

4. Oral Health and Overall Health Go Hand in Hand

If the eyes are the windows to the soul, your mouth is a window to your overall health. The link between good dental health and good general health is by now well-established.

5. It Feels Great!

There’s nothing quite like that clean fresh feeling you get after a dental cleaning!

At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall, we offer general and restorative dentistry. Our patients come to us from Rockwall, Royse City, Backland, Heath, Fate, and throughout the 75032 area. Call our office to schedule your next cleaning and checkup with us today!

Preventative Maintenance For Your Irreplaceable Smile

Preventative Maintenance For Your Irreplaceable Smile In Rockwall

You know the old saying: prevention is the best medicine. At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall, we are big advocates of preventative dentistry as the best way to maintain dental health.

Preventative dentistry, though, is more than healthy teeth and gums. Your dental health is directly related to your overall health. Poor dental health has been linked to various diseases and conditions, such as heart disease, premature birth and low birth weight, and diabetes.

Furthermore, poor dental health leads to gum disease. With regular brushing and flossing, and twice yearly dental checkups, gum disease is 100 percent preventable.

More Reasons
The above should be enough to get anyone in to the dentist’s office twice a year. But if it isn’t, here are three more very good reasons why you should get a cleaning and checkup every six months.

  • Plaque and tartar. Even with brushing and flossing twice a day, plaque can build up on the teeth and gums. Plaque hardens into tartar. Simply put, there are areas in the mouth that your floss and toothbrush just cannot reach. Professional cleanings, however, can.
  • X-rays. By taking dental x-rays and updating them regularly, we can detect problems that a simple visual inspection won’t turn up. The sooner new issues are treated, the better: treatment will be easier, less painful, and less expensive.
  • Oral cancer. It isn’t just smokers who need to be concerned about oral cancer; anyone can get it. Finding it in its earliest stages gives you the best chance for successful treatment and a full recovery. We can check for any symptoms, and if we find them, tell you what you need to do.

As you can tell, there are lots of reasons why it’s important to see us at Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall twice a year for a cleaning and checkup. Services include family and cosmetic dentistry. Call for an appointment today!

3 Reasons Not To Skip A Dental Checkup

cosmetic dental Rockwall

Life gets busy. Sometimes it seems impossible to keep up with everything you need to do. At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall TX, we understand that. (Life gets busy for us, too!) But we encourage you to think twice before you cancel or postpone a dental checkup because you think it’s less important than the twenty other items on your to-do list.

Twice-yearly dental exams are essential for keeping your smile in great shape!

You might say: “But my teeth feel fine.”

Our answer? Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security. The fact is that no news isn’t necessarily good news. Dental troubles can be progressing without you being aware of it.

1. Your Gums May Be Receding
Gum recession doesn’t happen all at once. Gum tissue can move back almost imperceptibly until teeth and bone are in danger.

2. Decay May Be Lurking
When the acids in plaque start drilling into a tooth, we usually don’t feel it until it has passed through the enamel and dentin and hits the nerve. Ouch! By that time, there is a crater in the tooth. Regular cleanings remove plaque before it can do any damage.

3. Prevent Oral Cancer
About 50,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year. During your checkup we’ll screen for oral cancer. As with all types of cancer, early diagnosis is essential.

After your entire mouth has been examined, we will detail what is necessary moving forward. Whether that’s flossing more often or discussing major fixes such as braces, we will make certain that you get all the information you need to ensure your smile is bright and beautiful!

Scheduling twice-yearly exams with Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall TX will ensure you avoid serious dental problems. Our services include family and restorative dentistry. Call for an appointment today!
