Does Whitening Toothpaste Work?

porcelain veneers cost Rockwall

Are your teeth becoming yellow? Do you miss that pearly white smile of your youth? If so, you are not alone! At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall TX, one of the most common problems our dental patients exhibit is that of yellowing teeth. Though we offer top-of-the line teeth whitening services, our patients will often ask us whether over-the-counter tooth-whitening agents can achieve that same effect. We are here to set the record straight!

Because many dental products such as toothpastes and mouthwashes claim to be able to enhance your teeth, it is understandable that there should be some confusion as to how effective they really are. Most of the time, changing your toothpaste to one with a whitening agent can’t hurt, as these products contain safe chemical additives that gently polish and whiten teeth. However, these substances can only remove stains that are on the surface of the teeth. This commonly results in whitening by roughly one shade. On the other hand, quick, in-office procedures usually enhance your teeth anywhere from three to eight shades. Quite a difference!

So there you have it! A whitening toothpaste, while helpful on a superficial level, does not compare to in-office whitening. Why not swing by Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall TX and schedule a whitening today? We also offer veneers, crowns, dental implants, and gum disease treatment. Most of our clients see the dramatic results of their in-office whitening and decide to go for the whole smile makeover!

If you are looking for quality dental care in the Royse City, Backland, Heath, or Fate areas, contact us today!

Is It Growing In Your Mouth?

Rockwall porcelain veneers

Believe it or not plaque can rear its ugly head in any Rockwall mouth – even yours – no matter how meticulous you try to be. If you have deep grooves, watch out. If you have a receding gum line, watch out. If you are a candy-loving Rockwall resident with the proverbial sweet tooth, watch out.

The plaque process goes something like this:
Bacteria naturally occurs in the mouth, always will. Bacteria will try to colonize on the smooth surfaces of your teeth. At first, it will be soft enough to be removed with a fingernail. After 48 hours, it will start to harden. Give it 10 days and it will be that substance most difficult to remove, tartar. (See picture.) This bacteria will feed on sugars and produce acid that will eat away the tissues of the tooth and lead to cavities. Cavities will originate on the surface and spread on and through the tooth. The best way to deal with plaque is to have a consistent removal process, i.e. regular daily brushing and flossing after eating and even sleeping.

A fabulous smile with fabulous teeth isn’t always the reality for Rockwall, Royse City, Backland, and Heath,McLendon-Chisholm folks. We encourage anyone in the Rockwall area who is unhappy with their smile to consider the benefits of a smile makeover.

Cosmetic dentistry can be a significant investment but the truth of just how much it will cost for veneers, braces, dental implants and even teeth whitening may surprise you. At our Rockwall cosmetic dentistry office, you can expect to learn about cosmetic dentistry, porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, orthodontics, restorative dentistry, and any number of other dental services.

Karen Williamson has been serving the Rockwall area since 1993. Call 469-402-0024 to schedule a consultation.

To Chew Or Not To Chew

To Chew Or Not To Chew In Rockwall

Hello gum chewers, today we’re going to talk about that sticky wad in your mouth. You know that it can freshen your breath, but can it really help shield your smile from tooth decay?

It really depends on the type of gum. Chewing regular sucrose-based gum can be beneficial in removing bits of food from the surface of teeth, but that benefit is negated by the stream of sugar washing over your teeth as you chew.

However, gum with some alternative sweeteners has an added benefit for your pearly whites. Xylitol is a sweetener that not only has fewer calories than traditional sugars, but it also has antimicrobial properties that curtail plaque build-up. This means that xylitol inhibits the growth of bacteria that causes tooth decay.

So if you’re headed out to a restaurant, bring a pack of sugar-free gum with you and pop it in your mouth when your meal is done. Of course, brushing and flossing are the optimal practices for your oral health, but when you can’t brush, choose a sugarless gum with xylitol.

I’m dentist Karen Williamson of Karen E Williamson D.D.S., P.A. We offer cosmetic dentistry, porcelain veneers, and teeth whitening. If you have any questions about how to improve your oral health, or if you would like specifics about any of our cutting-edge cosmetic dental procedures such as teeth whitening, veneers, or complete smile redesigns, give us a call today at 469-402-0024.

Why Look For The Seal?

Look For The Seal In Rockwall

When you go to a drugstore or supermarket looking for toothpaste, mouthwash, teeth whitener, or other oral care product, make sure that it carries the seal of the American Dental Association. This is a simple way to make wise choices for the products you need to keep your mouth clean, healthy, and free of cavities.

You can rely on the American Dental Association (ADA), which only places its seal on a product after it has been evaluated to be safe as well as effective. This often means that companies have to meet standards even higher than those required by law.

Making sure to purchase products with the seal is practically like shopping with your Rockwall dentist or dental hygienist right by your side!

Hi, I’m dentist Karen Williamson of Karen E Williamson D.D.S., P.A in Rockwall. We also serve the Royse City, Backland, and Heath, McLendon-Chisholm areas. We take pride in caring for our patients and, like the ADA, want you to have a healthy, beautiful smile.

Many of our patients want information about smile redesigns. If you’d like to know what cutting-edge cosmetic dentistry can do for your smile, schedule an appointment and we’ll guide you on possible courses of treatment.

Cosmetic Dentistry vs. General Dentistry

Rockwall Cosmetic Dentistry

Today’s article describes how general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry are different.

General dentists are dedicated to preventing and treating oral diseases such as cavities and gum disease. When a problem is diagnosed, let’s say, a cavity between two teeth, a general dentist will establish the best way to restore the tooth involved.

Cosmetic dentists perform elective dental procedures that make a smile more attractive. Cosmetic dentistry procedures available at Karen E Williamson D.D.S., P.A include teeth whitening, tooth-colored fillings, dental bonding, veneers, inlays, onlays, and dental crowns.

Some dentists, like myself, offer both general and cosmetic dentistry procedures. In some cases, there is a cosmetic component to restorative procedures. For example, if a dental patient comes in after receiving an injury that chipped a front tooth, the tooth needs to be restored to prevent decay. The tooth is also less structurally sound, so it is vulnerable to further damage. In addition, the tooth affects the overall appearance of the smile. Depending on the specifics of the damage, there are several restorative options. Dental bonding, porcelain veneers, and crowns are all used to repair a damaged tooth.

As you can see, there is not always a definitive line between general and cosmetic dentistry. At Karen E Williamson D.D.S., P.A, my friendly team provides a full spectrum of preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dental procedures.

We treat area patients of all ages: from toddlers just beginning to get their baby teeth to mature patients who remember the days when many people were afraid of dentists and their whiny drills. (Some of our wonderful elderly patients might have crowns that are older than our hygienists.)

Experienced dental professionals who provide pediatric, general, orthodontic, and cosmetic dental procedures can meet all of your family’s dental needs.

If you are looking for a full-service dental practice in the Rockwall area, I invite you to visit Karen E Williamson D.D.S., P.A in Rockwall. To schedule an oral examination or cosmetic dental smile makeover consultation, call 469-402-0024.

Floss Pick Facts For Rockwall

fast teeth whitening Rockwall

Health-conscious individuals want to keep their teeth as clean as possible. However, they are also looking for convenience. That’s why many of them turn to floss picks instead of conventional dental floss.

These little tools are quite handy. They usually have a handle that is pointed and can double as a toothpick, and a length of floss strung in a U-shaped groove. They are economical and can be used more discretely than floss.

While this may seem like a dream come true for those hoping to make flossing a more regular part of their oral health routine, floss picks are still a step below actual floss when it comes to effectiveness.

The American Dental Association has only approved dental floss for cleaning in between teeth. One issue is that floss picks can’t curve and form the angles needed for superior cleaning.

So, what is a responsible dental patient to do? The first thing is to talk to your dentist. If you love floss picks, continue to use them when convenient. But try to use regular dental floss daily.

If you are in the process of looking for a new dentist, we hope that you consider Karen E Williamson D.D.S., P.A. We have been serving the Rockwall area since 1993 from our Rockwall office.

Our friendly staff would love to answer any questions you have regarding flossing and other dental health concerns. We also welcome questions about cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth whitening and veneers.
