Are You Smiling?

cosmetic dentist Rockwall

The importance of brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day is something we emphasize to all of our patients. Along with regular checkups and cleanings at Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall, it’s the best way to maintain your beautiful smile.

A good dental hygiene routine, something you do every single day without fail, is essential to your dental health. It’s related to your overall health, too.

Should you brush your teeth before you floss, or after? We’re asked that from time to time. According to one survey, there’s about a fifty-fifty split of opinion on which is better, with a slight edge going to those who brush first. We think you should do whichever you prefer. Just be sure to do both!

Are there aspects of your smile you would like to improve? Cosmetic  dentistry can give your smile an upgrade. Available procedures include:

  • Porcelain veneers. Thin shells of medical-grade ceramic cover any flaws.
  • Bonding. A composite resin is shaped on your teeth to repair damage or improve appearance.
  • Dental implants. Missing one or more teeth? Dental implants look and  function like the real thing.
  • Teeth whitening. For the most dazzling smile possible, nothing beats professional teeth whitening.

Are you smiling? At Karen E. Williamson DDS PA in Rockwall we certainly hope so! If not, cosmetic dentistry can help. People from xxx keep smiling with our xxx. Call for an appointment today!

Versatile Veneers For A Vivid Smile

porcelain veneers Rockwall

Have you ever wished you could quickly attach perfectly shaped, dazzling white front surfaces to your teeth? Guess what? You can! With porcelain veneers, you can eliminate smile imperfections in just one visit to your outstanding Rockwall cosmetic dental office.

Simple procedure, dramatic results

The advanced porcelain veneer is one of the most versatile items in a cosmetic dentist’s toolbox. Veneers turn unattractive smiles into beautiful smiles with minimal disruption to the existing tooth structure. They are quicker and usually less pricey than complete crowns but are made with the same durable, translucent porcelain.

A celebrity smile secret

It’s no that wonder that a very large percentage of men and women in the public eye have porcelain veneers. An actress can receive a perfect smile in the morning and appear on a talk show that evening. A supermodel can permanently remedy a discolored tooth speedy and pose for photos right after leaving her dental office. A local television news anchor can have his teeth perfectly aligned in a couple of hours and report Texas news that same day.

Trust an experienced cosmetic dentist in Rockwall

I am Karen Williamson of Karen E Williamson D.D.S., P.A in Rockwall, Texas. I have carried out hundreds of veneer placements—alone and in combination with crowns, inlays/onlays, and tooth implants for dramatic smile makeovers. Perhaps you should consider veneers as the best way to attain your brilliant smile.

The 4 Stages of Gum Disease

four stages of gum disease Rockwall

You may be wondering why sometimes your gums are red and swollen, or your breath is bad. Maybe you’re just concerned with improving your dental health and want to be more aware for your next appointment. Learn about the four stages of gum disease you may be overlooking when thinking of your overall oral health needs.

GINGIVITIS

Try not to worry if your dentist recently diagnosed you with gingivitis. There is still hope for a full recovery and you can take action to prevent the condition from worsening. The main symptoms of gingivitis include red or swollen gums that cause discomfort while brushing and flossing. You may also notice undesirable breath on occasion. Gingivitis is typically caused by the buildup of bacteria on our teeth and along the gum line. The most common treatment is increased brushing and flossing in addition to more frequent dentist appointments. Be prepared to visit the dentist every 3 months for deep cleanings and professional care instead of the usual semi-annual checkups.

EARLY STAGE PERIODONTAL DISEASE

Unfortunately, if you hear “periodontal disease” or “periodontitis” in your next dentist appointment, you may be at risk of more serious effects. This means an infection has spread beneath your gums allowing harmful bacteria to slowly destroy the bone holding your teeth in place. Slight periodontal disease is the next step in the development of gum disease (or periodontal disease). This may lead to redness and swelling of the gums, foul breath and recurrent bleeding during brushing and flossing. It can be concerning any time our gums bleed while flossing, but it isn’t always a sign of gum disease and may simply be from deficient dental hygiene. Also, early stage periodontal disease can’t be entirely reversed, but your dentist can develop a treatment plan to keep it from getting worse.

MODERATE PERIODONTAL DISEASE

Moderate periodontal disease can also be managed by your dentist, but involves more advanced care. Your dentist will need to clear away plaque from below the gum line (this same treatment may also be used with early stage periodontal disease) in order to help correct the condition. Since your gums are slowly detaching from your teeth at this stage, surgery can reshape your gums and close the pockets between your gums and teeth to reduce plaque buildup. This may sound intimidating, but don’t worry too much! With exceptional self-care and one of our savvy oral hygienists at your side you can still prevent this condition from worsening.

ADVANCED PERIODONTAL DISEASE

The last stage of periodontitis creates the most devastating impact on your oral health. Most of the time dentists will use surgery to prevent tooth loss. Flap surgery is common for this stage and involves cleaning the actual roots of your teeth by scrubbing behind your gums. Your dentist may also smooth or reshape your compromised bone to prevent bacteria from accumulating.

However, keep in mind all of us are in control of our dental health. Occasionally genetic conditions can weaken our immune system and harm our gums and teeth, worsening periodontitis, but usually, we can prevent acute conditions like this from progressing by practicing proper oral hygiene.

Five Fast Ways to Improve Your Smile

cosmetic dental and implants Rockwall

Do you have a special event coming up? Perhaps a wedding, graduation, milestone birthday, anniversary, or reunion? These celebrations usually involve a lot of photographs and, of course, you want to look nice. You may not have time to lose 20 pounds, but you can significantly transform your smile with cosmetic dentistry.

Here are five cosmetic dental procedures that can usually be performed in one office visit.

1. Veneers
Porcelain veneers have been a successful treatment for decades but we never fail to be amazed by the outstanding results they deliver. A veneer is a super-thin layer of porcelain bonded permanently to the tooth. A veneer can cover a chip, hide a crack, make discoloration disappear, or fix a misshapen tooth.

2. Gum Contouring
Perhaps your teeth are beautiful and healthy but you have a gumline that is too low or too high and detracts from the presentation. Gum contouring can reshape the gumline and perfect your smile. Book a consultation with dentist Williamson today for an intensive examination and savvy guidance regarding your gumline.

3. Enamel Shaping
Just one slightly misshapen tooth can downgrade the characteristics of a smile even if all the other teeth have a pleasing appearance. (Your mouth is no place for a sore thumb, right?) Let dentist Williamson reshape the tooth so it blends in seamlessly.

4. Bonding
Dental bonding just gets better and better as additional advanced materials are developed. Bonding is used in a multitude of applications to fix teeth with cosmetic and structural issues. The newest prep processes are minimally invasive – leaving you with more of your own tooth structure.

5. Teeth Whitening
Make your smile pop with professional in-office teeth whitening. There is nothing like an outstanding white smile to give you complete confidence.

Cosmetic dentistry is an investment that will bless you with increased confidence every day. We look forward to getting your smile ready for all those hugs, laughs, and, of course, pictures.

Healthy Living Starts With A Smile

general dentistry Rockwall

What comes to mind when you hear the term “healthy living?” A dinner plate with a grilled chicken breast and carrot sticks? The sound of your feet rhythmically hitting the ground on your favorite jogging trail? A cholesterol test indicating that your arteries are doing great? If you picture a white, healthy smile or a dental X-ray showing no decay, we salute you.

At Karen E Williamson D.D.S., P.A, we urge everyone with a smile (that includes you!) to include oral health in your definition of “healthy living.”

When done correctly and consistently, brushing and flossing are crucial components of everyday oral hygiene. Brushing should be done at least twice a day. We recommend a soft-bristled toothbrush to protect your gums. Brush your teeth in small, circular motions for 2-3 minutes, and be sure you reach all the surfaces.

Flossing should be done once a day and is necessary for reaching the areas where a toothbrush cannot. A wide variety of floss can be found at Rockwall stores, so experiment until finding one you like.

I’m dentist Karen Williamson of Karen E Williamson D.D.S., P.A. As a healthcare provider, I am passionate about helping each of my patients reap the benefits of oral health and avoid tooth woes that can compromise their all-around health.

And just as some healthcare providers offer cosmetic procedures, I also serve you with services that improve the aesthetics of your smile. Ask us about porcelain veneers, dental implants, invisible braces, white fillings, inlays/onlays and same-day teeth whitening. Small Dental Annoyance Or Serious Problem?

mouth sores Royse City

Today in the Rockwall dental blog we are going to talk about stomatitis. Stomatitis is dental-speak for something very common: non-specific irritations found in the mouth. Stomatitis is commonly caused by cold sores, gum disease, or even from biting the inside of the mouth (ouch!). Any time the membranes in the mouth become inflamed, they are referred to as stomatitis.

Most individuals have probably suffered from stomatitis and don’t think it’s a big deal. The good news is that these patients are usually right because the majority of these irritations clear up on their own in less than two weeks. While they might affect the ability to speak or eat or fall asleep, they are ordinarily just a temporary inconvenience.

However, there are cases where a bacterial or a viral infection can occur in these areas of inflammation.

Because of this possibility, your Rockwall area dentist should be aware of these issues. Even if you are fortunate and there is no infection present, your dentist can always help you treat the symptoms of stomatitis.

5 Tips For Treating Mouth Sores

Prevent Mouth Sores Royse City

Hi. I’m dentist Karen Williamson. When my patients get mouth sores, I counsel them to evaluate what they’re eating and make some changes. By following these tips, you too can avoid the discomfort of eating and help to increase the speed of healing.

1. Eat soft or pureed foods. Don’t worry, you won’t have to eat baby food—plenty of adult dishes fit the bill:

cream soups
yogurt
hot cereal
mashed potatoes
puddings

2. Keep your meals bland for a while. I know it’s humdrum, but watch out for overly spicy, tart, salty or acidic foods while you have a mouth sore.

3. Also, keep it cool. Only eat dishes served at room temperature or chilled.

4. Use a straw so that whatever you are drinking can bypass the mouth sore altogether.

5. Try to moisten dry foods. You can add sauces, dressings, and gravies to your meals.

I hope that these suggestions will help you the next time you suffer from a mouth sore. If you are looking for a dentist in the Rockwall area, consider my practice, Karen E Williamson D.D.S., P.A. We have been serving Rockwall since 1993.
